We spoke with Nichole Jenniges, the photographer behind this stunning maternity photo shoot and she shared with us that she chose the sand dunes as a backdrop that is both simple and epic. “The Sand Dunes complement the power of being both a female and a mother,” said Nichole. The Great Sand Dunes where these photos were taken is located in south-central Colorado and is part of the San Louis Valley. A National Park and Reserve, the Great Sand Dunes were originally designated a national monument in 1932 by President Hubert Hoover. The Park includes over 100,000 acres and is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America.
Great Sand Dunes visitors who wish to capture maternity or other photos in the park should plan for either late afternoon or early morning photos. In the afternoon the sun drops lower than the San Juan Mountain Range providing dramatic light angles and shadows among the dunes. It is best to avoid mid-day trips to the dunes as the sand can reach a temperture of up to 140 degrees and thunderstorms might send you running inside.
